A feral roar broke through the woods, and the wolf froze over me for an instant before a large shadow barreled into him.

The two wolves tumbled in the snow. Shocked, all I could do was stare. I would know that beast anywhere.

Raoul.

“No!” Ximena screamed. “Ignore him! Kill her!”

Her voice pierced me. I struggled to rise, but another wolf knocked me over, and hot pain seared my shoulder. Gritting my teeth, I turned to try and defend myself. A large and thick vine shot up, grabbed the wolf around the middle, and hurled him through the air.

A strange feeling surged in me.

Raoul roared, and I turned to see that all the wolves were on him. The metallic scent of blood filled the air, and the snow bled red.

They were going to kill him.

Purple eyes. Purple magic. This was her. She was controlling them. Take her out, and the wolves would kneel before their king.

She was strong. Far stronger than me, but I was not powerless. I knew that now.

The vines were mine.

How that was possible, I didn’t know, but now was not the time to analyze that. Focusing on that foreign feeling welling up inside me, I turned once more to Raoul. Vines rose from the snow and snapped the wolves off him. His gaze swung to me, and his shock mirrored my own. But the vines wouldn’t buy him much time.

Whirling on Ximena, I pointed at her with a shaky hand. That fog I’d felt from her earlier in the castle, when she would have had her lords rape me, tried to penetrate my mind, but I focused on the magic inside of me.

“Your reign of terror is over,” I whispered through gritted teeth.

“No!” she screamed as a tornado of green whirled around her. It covered her from neck down, and as the vines squeezed, the glow in her eyes dimmed.

Wolves fell around us, and Raoul pounced. Turning at the last minute, I squeezed my eyes shut as Ximena’s screams faded into eerie silence.

Raoul’s furious and heartbreaking howl roared through the night. I opened my eyes, and our gazes connected.

Confusion. Pain. Blood dripped from his mouth.

Then, he took a single step and collapsed. The wolf disappeared, and the man lay motionless in the snow.

“No!” Running, I fell next to him and cupped his face. To my relief, his eyes opened, and he grunted. Blood seeped from his clothes into the snow. The fae were fast healers, but I had no idea how extensive his injuries were. And we were running out of time.

If he wasn’t inside before midnight, the kingdom would suffer.

“You have to get up. We have to hurry,” I urged as I tugged at him. “Please.”

With some struggle, he stood, but he wobbled. There was no way he was going to walk on his own two feet.

Suddenly, a whistle pierced through the night, and I looked to the side. A sled, pulled by the very wolves that had just attacked us, appeared out of the woods. A large man jumped from the sled and hurried toward us.
